| Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during groundworks associated with the construction of a replacement retail property. The construction of the former retail properties in the 1950's had removed archaeological evidence for occupation on the site prior to the 19th century. Elements of the 19th century buildings had survived on the site as well as a ditch of unknown function, aligned parallel with West Street. Precise dating of the ditch was not possible, only three pottery sherds were recovered dating from the pre-conquest period to the late 13th century. Late 16th century material was recorded on the street frontage from a deposit that probably filled a construction trench for the wall removed by the excavation of Pit 10. This suggested that the wall was originally 17th century in date and rebuilt, or at least repointed, in the 19th century. [Au(adp)] |
