Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a proposed development site identified that archaeological remains had been recorded there in 1992, following the demolition of a building. Finds had included prehistoric flints, Roman pottery, later medieval roof tile and pottery, a Victorian well and a possible Roman ditch. Further excavations in the vicinity had revealed Roman buildings, Saxon pottery and intercutting medieval ditches. Numerous findspots had been recorded in the centre of Staines, a Roman and medieval town. It was concluded that the proposal site had a high archaeological potential, but it was noted that the extent to which archaeological remains had been damaged or disturbed as a result of the construction and demolition of previous buildings was not known. Trial trenching was recommended. [AIP] |
