Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a housing development identified that only a small number of archaeological sites had been recorded in the surrounding area. A possible barrow lay to the north-west, two Early Bronze Age spearheads had been found to the east, and two groups of sarsen stones, arranged in circles, had been found to the south-east. A disturbed area to the north of the stones may have been a quarry for sarsen. Cartographic and documentary evidence indicated that the proposal site had formed part of the heathland until the mid 19th century, when Collingwood Farm had been established and the land used for agricuture. It was concluded that the site had a relatively low archaeological potential. However, as it covered an area of c. 2ha and was undeveloped, a watching brief during construction was recommended.
