Abstract: |
The site of a proposed extension to the Castle Inn stood within an area of known archaeoloogical potential. A Saxon burgh was understood to have been created in the 9th to early 10th centuries AD. Archaeological excavations undertaken within the village during the 1960s provided what were thought to be indications of Saxon settlement in addition to later medieval features. Little evidence suggesting Saxon or medieval occupation was located within the site. Sherds of residual medieval pottery and a possible medieval padstone were located but the dating of this feature was tentative. It was presumed that the site represented part of an area where such continued use as an animal enclosure produced no sub-surface disturbance or features. Alternatively, it was also suggested that gardening activity in recent years may have destroyed fragile archaeological remains. [Au(adp)] |
