Abstract:
A programme of consolidation and complementary excavation was undertaken following a survey of Kendal Castle which had highlighted structural problems with regard to the vaulted cellars of the Hall Block, the principal structure within the castle curtain. The castle had probably been founded in the first half of the 13th century, replacing an earlier fortification to the west of the town. Excavations had been undertaken in 1967-71, and further work had been carried out in 1996, when excavation of the Hall Block had exposed the upper surface of two extant vaulted chambers and confirmed the existence of two collapsed chambers to the west. Work in 1997 comprised the monitoring of the removal of silt from where it had accumulated along the inner faces of the curtain wall. Two areas of silt were considered archaeologically sensitive enough to warrant hand excavation. The two large, collapsed vaults excavated in 1967-71 were revealed in more detail, showing a flight of stairs in the northern chamber. An intramural passage was shown to have run along the south and west walls of the Hall Block. Excavation of one of the two additional areas, against the inside face of the west curtain wall, revealed the footings of what may have been a staircase leading up to the parapet. The second excavation examined the relationship between the surviving elements of the South Tower and the internal face of the curtain wall, showing that the curtain wall had been a later addition. The report brought together the various elements of the Lancaster Unit's work at the castle, together with the earlier excavation archive, and a programme of post-excavation research was proposed.
