Abstract: |
The assessment was conducted at the site of Bee Low Quarry, and revealed it as a site of regional archaeological potential. Though no prehistoric remains could be discerned in the study area, the site was known to lie amidst a high density of prehistoric 'communal' monuments with a suspected Bronze Age barrow and three Neolithic find spots derived from the quarry area itself. The status of the development zone as an area of prehistoric activity could not therefore be discounted. Medieval remains close to the study area were possibly demonstrated by a series of earthworks indicating a zone of either lead or lime working whereas past field boundaries located to the east of the site also hinted at a programme of early farming close to the development zone. Archaeological sites found in the study area included excavation features with possible kilns associated with them; an 18th or 19th century date was tentatively forwarded for them. [Au(abr)] |
