Abstract:
The desk-based assessment was undertaken of the proposed construction of a retail complex. Evidence of settlement had been recorded spanning prehistoric to post-medieval periods from the area. The site lay adjacent to the probable route of a Roman Road and was located within the hinterland of the Roman and medieval settlement. Investigation to the west of the site had produced evidence for later medieval activity. Most of the existing buildings had basements, but the site probably included isolated areas of open ground that may have been relatively undisturbed. In some of the existing 19th and early 20th century buildings smaller cellars may not have wholly truncated deeper archaeological features, or possibly incorporated earlier structures. However, deep modern basements would have removed archaeological deposits in many areas. The redevelopment had the potential to remove disturb archaeological deposits/features in areas of the site that had not been previously disturbed. A substantial part of the site did not appear to have been basemented, mostly on the eastern side of the site in an area which covered c.3,500 sq. m. An area of slightly disturbed possible deposits and two areas of low potential were identified along with an area which was not considered to have any archaeological potential. [Au(abr)]
