Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during the replacement of overhead electrical services with below ground cables to St Andrew's Church. Very little of importance emerged during the watching brief apart from the orientation of the possible medieval boundary wall. Although there was a large amount of human bone encountered during the excavation of the trench, all were disarticulated and scattered fairly evenly throughout the deposit. A small amount of pottery, mostly dating from the post-medieval period, was also recovered during the work. The service trench was excavated to 430mm which was not deep enough to encounter any other layers. This was because the graveyard was an artificial mound, built to provide a flood defence. In addition, a survey of the gravestones in the immediate vicinity of the service trenches was carried out and the information passed to the Diocesan council for examination. [Au(adp)] |
