Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken across the site of the proposed Building 5 development at Hitchin Priory. Two trenches were excavated across the footprint of the building. All buildings on the site had been demolished and the floor slab ad concrete foundations of the latest structure had been removed. Both trenches revealed significant structural evidence in the form of brick walls, all of these could be identified from earlier mapping evidence for the site and directly related to particular buildings. No evidence for buildings directly associated with the 1650 map of Hitchin could be identified and no finds were recovered dating earlier than the late 18th century. [Au(adp)] |
