Abstract: |
The evaluation comprised two hand dug test pits. The brickwork of the Middle Bastion exposed through these works was of good quality. Both bricks and mortar appeared stony and intact. It was assumed that the bricks dated to the 18th century, however, the pointing seen here was considerably more recent and of a high standard. It was demonstrated that the masonry extended beyond the 2m depth attained by these excavations. In the second test pit, natural terrace gravels were encountered at 20.43m OD. One large feature was cut into the gravel but was thought to be a tree bole. This was overlain by a buried topsoil sealed by a buried 'woodland floor' deposit, thought likely to have predated the widening of West Carriage Drive to the East. This was in turn overlain by a sequence of well-compacted dumps produced during the widening of the road. [Au(abr)] |
