Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a housing development identified that cremation burials of Roman and possible prehistoric date had been found in the vicinity. The site appeared to have lain on the arable fringes of the medieval and post-medieval town, and was not built upon until at least 1684. It had been developed to its greatest extent by the mid-19th century. Excavation of test-pits at the site was observed in December 1994; some cellaring was noted, and the few artefacts recovered were of 18th-19th century date. A watching brief during the development itself was recommended. [AIP] |
