Abstract: |
An historic building survey was undertaken of the west wing at Smithills Hall as part of a repair programme. As a Scheduled Ancient Monument and a Grade I listed building Smithills Hall is a site of national importance. The survey indicated the survival of medieval and post-medieval builds, either in the plan of the house or in its fabric. What was surprising was the degree of survival and, although few rooms retained their early integrity, there were enough indicators to show the principal architectural characteristics of each period.
