Abstract:
A desk-based assessment carried out along the proposed corridor for a water main identified the known archaeological sites within the line of the route. The route passed along land identified as being anciently enclosed and through part of the former Camborne-Redruth mining district. Four major historic mining complexes were identified where, as well as the surviving shafts, adits, buildings and leats of the documented workings, it was likely that earlier undocumented workings may have also been present. The valley was also a source of alluvial tin and it was likely to have had extraction occuring from at least the medieval period, with possible origins in prehistory. There was no known prehistoric sites along the route, however prehistoric activity was indicated by a fortified enclosure and hut circles at nearby Carn Brea. Later Prehistoric pottery had also been recovered from former farmland along the route. Place name evidence indicated major settlements in existence by the 14th century while some appear to have pre-Norman Conquest origins. There were no Listed Buildings or Scheduled Monuments along the route of the pipeline. [Au(adp)]
