Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken ahead of a scheme of redevelopment for a college. The college was located within the Canterbury Area of Archaeological Importance. Trenches one and two revealed that undisturbed natural brick-earth survived at a depth of 0.85m to 0.93m below the modern ground surface. A Late Iron Age to early Roman pit was observed in trench one and a late post-medieval pit observed in trench two. Trench three revealed what appeared to have been natural brick-earth at a depth of 0.90m below the modern ground level. Trench four revealed natural chalk and clay, and a small number of cut features which appeared to have related to the Roman period; the function of these features remained unclear. Roman pottery, residual worked flint and late prehistoric pottery were also recorded within the site. This suggested that an ancient agricultural soil horizon survived in this area. [Au(adp)] |
