Abstract:
The site lay in an area that had produced finds that spanned the Palaeolithic to the post-medieval period. Most of these had been chance finds, and firmly dated building remains were not known in Hammersmith until the early Saxon period. Although the area was almost certainly rural during the Roman and medieval periods, it nevertheless lay on the route of important highways leading west from the City of London. A possible Roman road was located immediately to the north of the hospital site. During medieval times the site was part of Pallingswick Manor, and later formed part of the park around Ravenscourt House. The site was sold off for building during the early 19th century, and was initially used for private houses before its conversion, from 1929 onwards, to a hospital. The potential for archaeology on the site was uncertain, particularly as the substantial foundations of the existing hospital buildings were likely to have truncated much of the area. [Au(abr)]
