Abstract: |
It seems probable that 23 Dane John had been constructed within the infilled medieval ditch surrounding the early Norman Castle. However, the ditch was re-cut, probably in the fourteenth century and may have served as an open sewer to be replaced by the Black Ditch in the seventeenth century. In the eighteenth century a brick-lined well or cess pit was dug through the soft infill of the medieval ditch and it was that feature which was found in the recent structural examination of the property.
