Abstract:
The watching brief was undertaken during two extensions to the 16th century farmhouse. Within the eastern trench directly below the wall of the standing building a feature infilled with flint and gravel was observed. It was possible that it formed drainage 'foundations' for a timber sill beam that perhaps preceded the standing brick wall. Further trenches were excavated to the north-west of the standing structure. Within the side of the northern trench, well embedded within the gravel, was a fragment of peg-tile of post-medieval date. A sherd of late 18th century pottery was recovered from the brick rubble overlying the gravel. It was possible that a gravel platform was created prior to the construction of the house. [Au(abr)]
