Abstract: |
Hereford County Hospital occupied the site where St Guthlac's Monastery was re-established in 1143 AD after it moved from the Castle Green in the south-east corner of Hereford. It remained in use until 1539 AD. 21 trenches were excavated within the area of the construction works. On the basis of the results of the work it appeared that the concentration of medieval activity associated with the priory lay elsewhere. The evaluation identified rubbish pits which may well have been associated with a dwelling of agricultural nature outside the confines of the priory but which was occupied during the period of the priory's use. A wall was also located north-east of Stonebow Road which was interesting in terms of its location and displayed a good degree of preservation. [AIP] |
