Abstract: |
Easington round barrow was re-excavated in 1996 in order to further investigate findings from earlier excavations during the 1890's and 1960's. A shallow grave had been uncovered in the 1960's, and although the skeleton had not survived, finds such as a jet button and beaker were recovered. Yorkshire pottery sherds and a tanged and barbed arrow were also found in the backfill from the 19th century excavation. Evidence for clearance burning, and the use of charred trunks and branches to form the mound structure (which had been built in two stages) were noted. Beneath the mound a Neolithic domestic occupation was revealed, featuring hearths, pits and postholes. Pottery, flint tools, rubbing and quern stones, and a loom weight were also found, with some of these acting as posthole packing.[Au(adp)] |
