Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of a site was undertaken in order to comply with a condition of planning consent for the tipping of inert construction waste to improve the land for agriculture, and for improvements to access. No archaeological sites or findspots within the proposal area had previously been recorded on the Lancashire SMR. The area had been enclosed in the 18th century, and Mount Pleasant Farm had been built within an existing field system between 1820 and 1850. Coal mining had taken place in the surrounding area from the late 18th century onwards, and had been initiated within the proposal area in the first half of the 19th century. By the end of the century six mines, both operational and disused, existed within the site. A total of sixteen sites were identified during a field inspection of the proposal area, many of which had also been revealed by the desk-top study. The features comprised six coal extraction shafts, a small sandstone quarry, trackways, field boundaries and two low spoil tips. Very little spoil was observed across the site, suggesting that it had either been removed or, more probably, spread over the surrounding area. It was recommended that the shafts should be recorded prior to development, and that a watching brief should be undertaken during topsoil stripping. [Au(adp)]
