Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was carried out on the proposed development site. The site was situated close to known prehistoric sites and a major Roman Road, and its riverside location was favourable to the survival of waterlogged and environmental remains. Geological evidence also indicated that alluvial deposits were likely to have sealed and preserved archaeological remains. Borehole data showed pre-alluvial topography, with areas of archaeological interest adjacent to the Wreake in the form of palaeochannel and peat to the south. In addition, there may have been a zone, originally a pre-alluvial island or islands favourable to prehistoric settlement in the west of the northern field. Map evidence showed that the site itself appeared not to have been built on since 1778. Therefore any remains were likely to have been well preserved beneath the present ground surface. [Au(adp)] |
