Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a residential development identified that it lay within an area of high archaeological potential, and that much of it had remained undisturbed by previous development. Early cartographic evidence indicated that the village of Elstead had extended to the junction of the Farnham-Milford Road with Hookley Lane, to the east of the site, and that buildings had been present on part of the site in the late 18th century. Archaeological records for the surrounding area were relatively sparse, indicating only a 16th century bridge, an early mill site occupied by an 18th century building, and a church with 13th and 15th century structural features, all situated to the west of the proposal area. It was recommended that trial trenching should be undertaken to test the archaeological potential of the site. [AIP] |
