Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a residential development identified that two sherds of probable Roman but possibly medieval pottery had been found at the site, and that a sandstone macehead and a stone axe of Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date had been found to the south. Cartographic evidence indicated that the site itself had first been developed in the 1930s. A large number of 1930s and 1940s buildings relating to its former use as a hospital were spread across the site, although substantial areas of grassland were evident in the central area between the two major groups of buildings, and between the buildings in the western group. Grassed fields lay on the western side of the site. It was concuded that much of the site had escaped development to an extent where all archaeological evidence which may have existed would have been destroyed, and that further testing of its archaeological potential would be necessary. It was recommended that trial trenching should be carried out. [AIP]
