Abstract:
A desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of the replacement of water supply mains crossing the Solent from Lepe to Gurnard Bay on the Isle of Wight. A total of five study areas were used to collate information. There were no Scheduled Monuments, Listed buildings or designated wrecks within the study areas. There was some potential for the presence of Lower, Middle and Early Upper Palaeolithic finds that may have survived as artefacts within secondary contexts, both on land and under water. There was high potential for the presence of in situ Late Upper Palaeolithic and Mesolithic artefacts and deposits with palaeoenvironmental potential that may have survived under water. The known maritime archaeological resource comprised three confirmed or possible wreck sites, three obstructions that may have been associated with wrecks, the discovery of a propeller and the loss of a modern yacht. There was some potential for the presence of unknown and undocumented wrecks from various periods dating to the Iron Age or earlier and for stray finds of ship borne debris from various periods. There was some potential for the presence of Neolithic, Bronze Age and Iron Age material within both the Hampshire and IOW study area and under water. Within the IOW study area there was high potential for Roman activity and some potential for Anglo Saxon or medieval activity. The potential for post-medieval activity in this area was low. Within the Hampshire study area there was some potential for Roman activity, low potential for Anglo-Saxon and medieval activity, high potential for post-medieval activity and WWII activity.
