Abstract:
Two geophysical surveys were undertaken to try and locate the possible church related to previous discoveries of burials at Fillingham. Field to North of Lakeside: A resistivity survey was undertaken in the field to the north of Lakeside Cottage. A linear high resistance anomaly was thought to have been due to a modern drain. An area of high resistance was located over an area of ground where the bedrock was particularly near to the ground surface, and as such was believed to have represented a modern feature. Likewise, the areas to the north of the area survey were over areas of ground that were lowered during the construction of Filligham Lake, leaving the bedrock nearer to the ground surface. The smaller areas of high resistance anomalies to just to the south of this landscaping may have represented midden deposits, as they were situated under large nettle patches. The most interesting feature was a small high resistance anomaly in the westernmost part of the survey. It was not known what this feature represented, although it was possible that it may have been a large cist burial. Unfortunately, the survey did not reveal the foundations of a building. It was possible that any foundations present in the survey area may have been too shallow for the resistivity meter to detect them. Lakeside Cottage Orchard: Both of the areas surveyed showed uneven levels of resistivity with no clear features or anomalies. This indicated either that the orchard did not contain any features of archaeological interest at the depth surveyed, or that the ground in the orchard had been greatly disturbed, presumably by root action.
