Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of works on the grounds of the Castle Hill Estate, accompanying the refurbishment of the main house. The entrance gate, main house, gardeners' cottage and stables at the site were all Grade II Listed Buildings. Two sites of archaeological interest had been recorded in the surrounding area, consisting of a cattle trough and a Grade II Listed 19th century ice house. Documentary records relating to the area of the Castle Hill Estate existed for the period from 1556 to the 1840s. The estate itself was formed in the 18th century, the present house being constructed in 1758-63. The pre-1750s house may have lain within an area now used as a car park; other buildings had also existed at the site. An archaeological evaluation was recommended. [AIP] |
