Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out in advance of proposed alterations to the Peace Gardens, which lay in the centre of Sheffield. The site had once been occupied by St. Paul's Church, a surviving wall of which stood to a height of c. 2m at the western edge of the gardens. The two trial trenches excavated were located on the known lines of the original church walls. However, no trace of the foundations was revealed, and it was found that considerable remodelling of the Peace Gardens had taken place following the demolition of the church. Whilst much of this alteration had probably occurred in the 1930s, further remodelling had also taken place more recently, perhaps during construction of the Town Hall extension in 1973-4. It was concluded that nothing of archaeological significance remained within the area evaluated. [Au(adp)] |
