Abstract: |
The only recorded archaeological site in the study area was Purley Farm recorded on Rocque's map of 1762, which may have had a late medieval origin. Cartographic evidence showed that the London Electric Firm was established on the site in 1916. Prior to 1916 the site was a 'green field' area of farmland, although gravel and chalk quarrying had taken place close by in the 19th century. A number of prehistoric and Romano-British period sites had been recorded on the Wandle Gravels in Croydon and South Croydon to the north, alongside the Purley Way and Brighton Road (originally Roman roads).
