Abstract: |
The archaeological and historical importance of the hedgerows bordering Cuckoo Lane, RAF Digby was assessed using the criteria established in the Hedgerow Regulations Act 1997 (Appendix 1) and in advance of proposed removal by the landowner. It was discovered that the hedgeline not only followed the parish boundary but also the boundary between the Wapentakes of Flaxwell and Langoe, which was certainly in existence by the end of the 10th century, and may have been earlier. There was, however, no indication that the hedge itself was particularly old and a map of 1789 indicated that at the time the boundary was a stone wall. [Au(adp)] |
