Abstract: |
The watching brief was undertaken during ground disturbance associated with improvements to the toilet facilities at the Church. Although ground disturbance was limited to one linear trench, which extended through the tower doorway and into the churchyard, the exercise afforded an informative below ground view of the archaeological potential of the Church. An early sandstone foundation wall, possibly dating to the medieval period, was partially revealed beneath a splayed 19th century brickwork foundation constructed to support the tower doorway. Further, part of a wide ditch feature - possible representing an earlier boundary to the churchyard - was identified within the present churchyard. Several fragments of post-medieval pottery were recovered, together with one fragment of possible medieval floor tile. [Au(abr)] |
