Abstract:
Only two of the extant structures, a footbridge over the stream north-west of the dock and part of the western dock entrance survived from the original later 19th century dock. Both structures were sandstone ashlar, the footbridge was in poor condition and showed signs of structural failure, the dock wall was obscured by vegetation and it was not possible to determine the extent of the survival of the feature. The site had played a role as a transit point for coal extracted from the nearby collieries from the early 19th century. The dock had undergone many alterations. The original structure of the eastern bank had been replaced with a modern wall of steel shuttering. There was no trace of a structure or platform relating to a footbridge that the maps showed crossing the entrance to the dock. All of the railway infrastructure, cranes and loading platforms marked on the historic maps in the eastern side of the site had been removed and the site had been extensively landscaped. Nothing survived of any of this 19th century infrastructure. [Au(abr)]
