Abstract: |
Archaeological recording was undertaken during emergency repair works to a burst water main. The stratigraphy revealed comprised 0.2m of modern gravel surface track, overlying 0.2m to 0.3m of 1990 backfill, overlying a sequence of natural river clay-silts and a possible dump deposit. The 24 artefacts and ecofacts recovered included one fragment of late medieval or early-post-Dissolution ceramic and three fragments of medieval floor tile. The finds assemblage in this area was interpreted as representing a midden deposit associated with the Abbot's Kitchen, in both the medieval and post-Dissolution period. It was thought that the river silts could have overlain archaeological deposits at a greater depth than the base of the sewer construction trench. [Au(abr)] |
