Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during the excavation of a trench for a retaining wall at the site of a residential development. Earlier monitoring of trial pits, excavted at the site in 1994, had revealed the brick floor of a cellar of probable 17th/18th century date. During the 1997 watching brief, severe disturbance by 19th century walls and foundation rafts to a depth of 2.9m below the modern ground surface was recorded; no archaeological features or artefacts were observed. It was concluded that the area exposed by the trench had been archaeologically sterile. [AIP] |
