Abstract: |
A desktop survey was undertaken in order to assess the archaeological potential of a c.65.82 ha area of land situated in the western corner of the parish of Costessey. While few archaeological sites had been recorded within this area, prehistoric, Roman, medieval and post-medieval sites lay in its immediate vicinity. The potential for studying prehistoric activity was of particular interest given the area's location close to an extensive Neolithic site. The development may also impact upon archaeological features relating to the development of Costessey Park from the Late Saxon period to the early 20th century. However, the removal of potential archaeological deposits over much of the site through mineral extraction and the confinement of the most intrusive development to this same area limited the opportunity for archaeological intervention. A single parcel of undisturbed land survived within the area of high-impact development designated for housing; the creation of a park in the generally undisturbed southern part of the site could be expected to have a relatively low impact upon any surviving archaeology.
