Abstract: |
A request was made for a rapid record to be made of certain internal ground-floor elements of the building which had been exposed during the course of recent renovation works. Although the Listed Building entry for the building described it as being of early 19th century date, it was shown from the recording work to be mainly a late-medieval timber-framed building of early to mid 16th century date, which incorporated earlier medieval masonry dated to between 1350 and 1450. Subsequently alterations were made in the 17th/18th centuries, the mid 19th century and the 1920s. Excavations both inside and outside the property made in connection with works for a new floor and extension removed archaeology but were not directly observed by an archaeologist. [AIP] |
