Abstract: |
An evaluation was undertaken on National Trust land proposed for a new vistors' car park. The development area lay 80 metres to the south-west of an Iron Age enclosure excavated in 1988 and within 30 metres of the Abbey complex to the north of the study area. A geophysical survey had also revealed an extensive spread of putative archaeological features. Seven trenches were excavated, although only a single archaeological feature, a sub-circular pit from which a sherd of medieval pottery was recovered, was revealed. A low unpronounced earthwork, tentatively identified immediately to the south of the Iron Age enclosure extended into the proposed car park area. [Au(abr)] |
