Abstract:
An archaeological investigation was undertaken during the course of restoration work at the site. Short lengths of walls or wall foundations were encountered in several deep soak-away trenches; the locations and/or depth of these trenches were modified to preserve the walls in situ. The most significant trench excavated, in terms of exposing the medieval Abbey remains, was the small trench excavated below the Cloister Arch. This exposed parts of the original masonry facing and decorative stonework (pilasters) of this important route between the Nave of the Church and the Cloisters. A small area of decorated medieval tiled floor also survived, as did the remains of two subsequent plain tile floors laid directly above. A medieval mortar floor, probably that of a cellar or undercroft was recorded in the Dormitory. The construction of the new Park Keepers Lodge in the south of Forbury Gardens exposed a length of well-built masonry wall along with associated and earlier surfaces and possible buried topsoil deposits.
