Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at a proposed development site, which lay within an area where Saxon remains had been recorded. The trial trenches revealed a number of features, including medieval pits, a later medieval stone building and a timber building slot with two adjacent post-holes, containing late Saxon to early medieval pottery. Post-medieval features included a 19th century cellar and a culvert. A sherd of prehistoric pottery was recovered from the vicinity of an undated stake hole. It was concluded that the foundations of the present building at the site had been restricted to the piles themselves and a radius of c. 1m around each one, the result of which was that a high proportion of the archaeological deposits would have remained unaffected.
