Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment for the proposed Texaco Service area confirmed that the site was close to significant archaeological sites and was, therefore, an area of some archaeological potential. The area was extremely close to an area of prehistoric and undated activity to the west, with other prehistoric sites to the north-west and south-west. Earthworks, including ridge and furrow strip fields, a possible platform and a hollow were present in field 6. These may have been evidence of medieval agricultural activity and land division. It was unclear whether the flat raised area was a medieval house platform or more recent landscaping. The report concluded that further staged evaluation of the area would be required to enable the archaeological impact to be better understood and to mitigate the likely impact of the proposed development.
