Abstract:
A desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of the proposed demolition of the existing industrial buildings and the construction of office buildings. The site lay between dense clusters of prehistoric sites and findspots around Heathrow and along the banks of the Thames. There had been several finds of prehistoric date fairly close by so there was a moderate possibility of such finds being present on the site. Roman pottery had been found on Sunbury Common, which raised the possibility of similar finds being on this site but this likelihood could only be described as low. Significant archaeological remains of later periods were unlikely because the site was part of an area of agricultural land until c.1800. This part of Sunbury grew around the railway station from the late 19th century onwards, when the first factory buildings appeared on the site. For most of the time from then until the present date the site had been occupied by buildings associated with the timber industry. These would not have had the dense foundations associated with some types of industrial buildings, except in localised areas and if there had ever been any archaeological remains on the site, they could have survived between the foundations of the covered areas and below the access roads and yards. There were no SMR entries for within the site boundary, nor did the site contain any SAMs or Listed Buildings. The proposed development would involve major groundworks which would have a significant impact on any surviving archaeological remains. Further evaluation by trial trenching was recommended.
