Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken of the south gable wall of the former Grade II Listed barn which had become structurally unsafe. The barn was of timber frame construction, probably built in the latter part of the 17th or early part of the 18th century. The watching brief provided some additional information on the original form of the timber wall framing of the barn, now entirely replaced with brick. The verification of the nature of the original panel infill material was significant in terms of the study of the transition from building in timber to brick within the county. The barn, and indeed the adjacent Manor Farmhouse, were built during a period of transition in constructional practises, at the vernacular level. Given the likely construction date of the barn, the possibility existed that some of the brickwork in the south gable wall may have been original infill material. The watching brief determined that this was not the case and that the original infill was, in fact, of either wattle and daub or lath and daub. The opportunity was taken to clarify the situation regarding the possible surviving of elements of the timber frame in the eastern sidewall of the barn, as suggested by the listing description. Inspection of the interior and exterior of the barn revealed no evidence of further wall framing. Of note, however, were two blocked openings in the east wall: a doorway in the centre, approximately, of the second bay from the north; and a window in the bay to the south of this. [Au(adp)]
