Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken of the site prior to the proposed opencast mineral extraction. The assessment indicated that the proposed development area formerly contained evidence of medieval ploughing, was near to known archaeological remains of a medieval date and was associated with the medieval village of Willesley. In addition, prehistoric finds were known in the area to the north-west. Therefore the area had some archaeological potential. The report recommended further archaeologicl investigation in the form of a geophysicl survey, to locate further earthworks, and trial trenching in the areas identified by the geophysical survey as being of archaeological siginificance.
