Abstract: |
The assessment was undertaken which was intended to collate and present data relating to Anglo-Scandinavian Norwich as part of the Interreg IIC North Sea Viking Legacy Project. The report concluded that Viking influence lasted long after 1066: Norwich streets continued to be named -gate. King Street was once Conesford (from Danish konungr - king). In the new Norman Cathedral, one of the early 12th century capitals was decorated in typical Scandinavian style with pairs of animals with interlacing snakes or ribbons. Even at the time of Domesday Book, the requirement that Norwich provide the king with a bear indicated connections and trade with the Scandinavian north. Inevitably, Scandinavian legacy in East Anglia remained intangible, but evidence for Scandinavian influence and participation in daily life in East Anglia and Norwich was growing. No longer need Norfolk and Norwich be seen as a peripheral part of the Viking world. Indeed a recent find of a gold ingot and gold working crucible made of Thetford-type ware from the Millennium Library site indicated that Norwich was as much a producer as an importer of high status finds during this period.
