Abstract:
Archaeological evaluation work was undertaken at the site prior to the proposed redevelopment for housing. A single evaluation trench, measuring 10m by 3m, was excavated perpendicular to Three Tuns Road, which ran to the north of the site. Following machine excavation of the trench, archaeological features were observed cutting into the naturally derived soils present at the trench base. These features consisted of: a square pit, post holes, two gullies and a ditch aligned east-to-west. On the basis of the pottery recovered from these features, they could be said to date from the Late Saxon period. The ditch contained a sherd of Middle Saxon pottery. Apart from the pit, these features were considerably truncated, perhaps by later agricultural activity. Sealing these features was a deep (1.00m +) deposit of 19th/20th century soil. A modern brick soak-away or similar structure was cut through the lower level of this soil. The findings of the evaluation suggested that occupation of the site had occurred during the Late Saxon period. [Au(abr)]
