Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a proposed redevelopment site identified that the line of the Saxon and medieval town defences had probably crossed the site, but that it was likely to have been disturbed to the east by a sewer pipe. There was some potential for the presence of Saxon and medieval deposits, either inside or on the defences, but most probably in terms of backyard activities such as rubbish pits, although buildings could survive at the Tanner Street frontage. Previous archaeological excavations to the north and west had located post-medieval tanneries denoted by groups of tanning pits; similar features could be present within the development area. The site had remained largely undeveloped until the 20th century. It was considered likely that any intact archaeological deposits woud lie at a depth greater than 1m below the present ground level.
