Abstract: |
A field survey was made of the Scheduled Ancient Monument of Pawston Hill Camp for Northumberland National Park. Documentary and aerial photographic evidence was also collected as part of the survey. Although there is a resemblance of the enclosure to a hillfort both in location and its multiple ramparts, close examination suggests its defensive qualities are few. Its origins may therefore be as a status symbol and territorial marker rather than purely defensive. [Au(adp)] |
