Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was carried out as a precursor to a Scheduled Ancient Monument Consent application for the construction of a tennis court. The assessment established that approximately half of the area of the proposed tennis court lay within the boundary of Scheduled Ancient Monument (DO 736), a Roman legionary fortress. Although no archaeological investigation had taken place within the proposed development boundaries, over 50 excavations and trial trenches as a well as geophysical surveys had been undertaken since 1966 over the area of the fort, which covered some c.40 acres. The assessment concluded that the proposed development site lay within the boundary of the Scheduled Monument, therefore Scheduled Monument Consent would have been required before any work could be carried out.
