Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a residential development identified that only two archaeological sites, a Roman coin hoard and a 17th century kiln, had been recorded in the surrounding area. Both lay at a distance of almost 2km from the centre of the proposal area. However, the site itself had been a medieval Royal Park, and contained a 17th century and later house which was a Grade II Listed Building, and which was to be restored as part of the development. It was concluded that the site covered an area known to be of great historical importance, and which could contain archaeological features relating to medieval or earlier activity within the park. An evaluation by trial trenching was recommnded. [AIP] |
