Abstract: |
Upon the removal of part of the rendering on the outside of the Reigate Priory buildings brickwork was revealed, this exhibited a number of different structural phases, along with a curious area of Greensand stonework. The elevation was studied in order to gain an understanding of the sequence of development for this part of Reigate Priory, and also to provide a permanent record of its current state. The first phase of the building of this elevation was dated to the second half of the 17th century and two other phases of development were recorded, the latter dating to the Victorian era. It was noted that it was difficult to explain the sequence of events indicated by the features of this wall, without being able to place them securely in the larger context of the whole building, or merely the adjacent wall of the same section of the structure. In October 1996 a second area of rendering was removed, adjacent to the area previously recorded, the observations were again noted. [Au(adp)] |
