Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out within a medieval church, for which the complete renewal of wooden pew floors and the construction of a sunken baptismal pool were proposed. Investigation beneath the existing floor of the nave and aisle revealed that earlier floor levels had been destroyed by extensive structural modifications in the 19th century. Fragments of the medieval church fabric survived only as isolated piers beneath the pillars of the nave arcades. Truncated graves of possible medieval date were found below the solid floor of the nave. Ten sherds of pottery were recovered, including one of Romano-British date and two of early-middle Saxon date.
